چکیده

A new performance model of the IEEE 802.11 protocol is introduced that calculates throughput, average packet delay, packet drop probability and average packet drop time. This model is validated with simulation results using the OPNET simulation package. The proposed model predicts 802.11 protocol performance very accurately since it considers both transmission errors and packet retry limits. The effect of errors and network size on the performance of the basic access scheme, in terms of throughput, packet delay, packet drop time and drop probability is explored.

History Based Contention Window Control in IEEE 802.11 Mac Protocol in Error Prone Channel

Problem statement: IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol is one of the most implemented protocols in this network. The IEEE 802.11 controls the access to the share wireless channel within competing stations. The IEEE 802.11 DCF doubles the Contention Window (CW) size for decreasing the collision within contending stations and to improve the network performances but it is not good for...

PUMA – A New Channel Access Protocol for Wireless LANs

In this paper we propose an extension of the IEEE 802.11 DCF protocol [5] called PUMA (Priority Unavoidable Multiple Access). PUMA can easy be implemented in wireless network cards instead of IEEE 802.11 DCF. It has been shown through simulation that PUMA is fair, efficient, stable and allows for provision of time-bounded services. Moreover, its performance is unaffected by hidden stations. The...

Analytical Analysis of Applying Packet Fragmentation Mechanism on Both Basic and RTS/CTS Access Methods of the IEEE 802.11b DCF Network Under Imperfect Channel and Finite Load Conditions

The mathematical modeling and performance evaluation of the IEEE 802.11 network in all its various extensions (802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, 802.11e, 802.11n, etc.) have already been widely explored over the past years. However, the Packet Fragmentation Mechanism (PFM), which is proposed by the IEEE work group to enhance the MAC sub-layer of the IEEE 802.11 standard in an error-prone channel, has ...

Linear Approximation Model Throughput Performance Analysis of IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordinated Function in Wireless Lossy Channel

One source of performance degradation in wireless networks is the frame error that occurs because of nonideal channel conditions. Most previous works assume an ideal transmission channel (i.e., no error in transmission), whereas other works assume that the error is constant and exists only in data packets. These previous works do not consider transmission errors in control frames (i.e., RTS, CT...

DSCR: A More Stable MAC Protocol for Wireless Networks

Channel capacity is a scarce resource in wireless networks. However, the way in which IEEE 802.11 DCF uses random backoff time to resolve the channel contention leads to inefficient utilization of this scarce resource. In particular, in a highly loaded network, the portion of channel bandwidth wasted due to collisions is significantly high. Prior work proposes various ways to improve the perfor...
